I&M Canal State Trail
Brief Description:
The Illinois and Michigan Canal State Trail follows the historic canal that connects Lake Michigan to the Illinois River. The canal was built between 1836 and 1848, forming a water route that linked the east coast to the Gulf of Mexico. Today the trail is used by hikers, bikers and snowmobilers and touches on many historic site along the way. No horses or other motorized vehicles are allowed on the trial because of its delicate condition
Trail Access:
Access to the trial can be attained through many of the area's State Parks and in the towns that it runs through.
