Centrally located on the shore
of Lake
Michigan, between the thriving metropolises of Chicago
and Milwaukee and only 8 mi (13
km) south of the Wisconsin border,
Waukegan is literally “At the Top of Illinois.”
It's one of the ten largest cities in the state and the biggest in Lake County. Also one of the region's oldest communities,
Waukegan laid its foundation all the way back in 1673 as a French
trading post and Potawatomi Indian settlement. It was known then as Little Fort,
however, after the town was incorporated in 1849 its community no longer wanted
to be characterized as "little" and changed the name of their town to
Waukegan, the Potawatomi word for "fort" or "trading post".
Seen today as a prime business, industrial and residential center,
the city continues to evolve as it sets forth on a major downtown and lakefront
revitalization effort, replacing the existing industrial area with residential
and recreational space—a project responsible for the reopening of the
landmark Genesee
Theatre, and the introduction of many new restaurants, shops and
accommodations in downtown Waukegan.
